What to know about a laminate flooring installation

Laminate flooring is an excellent alternative to genuine hardwood. It comes with true-to-life images and textured looks. It's also available in assorted styles and designs.

Laminate is durable, with a top coating, making it resistant to scratches, dents, fading, and water. It can stand up to wear from kids, pets, and heavy foot traffic and can last up to 25 years or more.

We put together some things you should know. It'll help you choose the best laminate flooring.

Not all laminate is the same

They all have different strength levels that determine where they can be used. Even if they look similar, some waterproof laminate flooring is meant for light use; others are strong enough for the heaviest wear.

The AC (Abrasion Criteria) is a one to five/six rating that, as the numbers go up, so does the strength. At the very least, choose an AC-3 rating, which is suitable for most floors.

Living and family rooms can have heavy foot traffic. Therefore, you can go one higher, AC-4.

Anything below AC-3 is meant for low-traffic areas and walls. Anything above AC-4 is intended for heavy commercial use.

Examine graphics

You should see knots, grains, swirls, etc. The best laminate flooring comes with digital images that are clear, vibrant, and accurate.

There should also be embossed with textured looks that include wire-brushed, hand-scraped, distressed, or embossed-in-register. If the image is hazy or out of focus, it could indicate the lesser quality–which won't last as long!

Buy the best you can afford

Laminate flooring is available in a range of thicknesses, but a more robust surface is always better. In addition, it's quieter and hides subfloor imperfections.

Installation is a snap (literally)

The pieces click together, mat, and hover over a clean, dry, and level subfloor without nails, staples, or adhesives. Underlayments must be used.
